Self-direction: the Queensland Context
Self-direction has been operating in Queensland for many years on a limited basis and has been modelled on the practices of several small self- or family-governed incorporated associations and individually established companies.
Interest in self-direction has increased following the advent of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
In November 2012 the Queensland Government introduced Your Life Your Choice as an option for people with disability and their families who wish to self-direct and manage the funding they receive from Disability Services. Your Life Your Choice enables people to have greater choice and control over the disability services they receive. Staffing OptionS has been engaged to develop resources to support Your Life Your Choice.
Products designed to assist people to manage their self-directed arrangements are already being produced locally, across Australia and overseas by host providers, traditional service providers and non-disability specific businesses. Resources developed through the Staffing OptionS Resource Development Project are not designed to compete with these other products but rather to unpack, de-mystify and hopefully simplify self-directed support for people using the Your Life Your Choice funding option.
