Fire Procedures
The Employer should develop an emergency procedure and exit plan and include it in induction material for all staff. The established procedures would be based on a risk assessment of the home.

Each person should have appropriate equipment in their home e.g. smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, fire blanket and have their workers trained in use of equipment based on the risk assessment and recommendations from Safehome audit.
The following procedure is applicable if supporting a person when a fire occurs:
- When the fire alarm sounds, locate fire and assess situation;
- Move people away from the vicinity of the fire to the designated safe area - call out "fire, fire" to alert neighbours;
- Leave all personal valuables behind;
- Contact the fire brigade or ask someone close by to contact;
- Contact the ambulance service if required;
- Ensure the person supported is assisted to the designated safe area;
- Only ever attempt to use fire extinguisher / fire blanket if safe to do so;
- If time permits close windows - do not lock;
- Do not go back into the residence - report all information to the fire brigade; and
- If the fire occurs in a person's home contact family and Host Provider and complete an Incident Report.
