Engaging your own workers

If you employ your own workers to provide direct care and support to a person with disability (e.g. they assist a person with disability with groceries shopping) you should ensure workers have:

  • if working with adults - a National Police Certificate; or
  • if working with children - a blue card; or
  • if working with both adults and children - a National Police Certificate and a blue card.

You must inform prospective workers that they will be required to undergo criminal history screening prior to being engaged by you.

It is the responsibility of workers to apply for their own National Police Certificate and the results are sent directly to the worker, so you will need to:

  • obtain evidence from the worker that they have a National Police Certificate, before you engage them to work for you; and
  • be satisfied that he contents of the National Police Certificate provides protection for people with disability - you should carefully consider whether to engage the worker if the contents indicate they have a criminal history.

Workers such as tradespersons and cleaners, who are not engaged directly by funded non-government service provider and who do not provide direct care and support to a person with disability, would not be required to undergo criminal history screening.
