Keep one eye on the future


A core element of self-directed support is that someone, either you or someone who knows you really well, takes responsibility for directing the support arrangements, ensuring that supports are matching needs and putting safeguards in place, both now and in the future.

When establishing your self-directed support it is wise to ask yourself what do I need to do now, who else could take on one or more of these roles in the future, what would it take to share this knowledge? The more these questions are thought about and recorded the more likely it is that other people will step forward as they will know what to do.  

This kind of thinking is often called 'succession planning', an important part of our planning as it is never too late, or too early, to think about the future.
